Style-Centric: Adding Dimension to a Canvas

- by Laura Liddell

This is a great way to add dimension to a canvas. I used extra thick Gesso but you could use texture paste or a similar product.

Extra thick gesso, stencil, canvas and masking tape to stick stencil into position.

Once stencil is secure apply the thick paste or gesso across the top using an old credit card or similar tool.

Before smearing

After smearing
Or you could use the toothed end of the tool (or make a similar shape by cutting it out of card).
Before dragging
After dragging
Then leave the paste to dry overnight and then remove the stencil.

You now have this wonderfully textured canvas.

So what to do now?
Well I challenged myself by using the Claudine Hellmuth's The Scrapbooker's Creativity Kit: Prompts And Ideas To Jump Start Your Layouts.

And guess which colours I pulled out for the challenge?

Getting ready to apply to canvases
And which word did I pull out?    "EXHALE"    Yikes, that got me thinking. I had to make a mind map to solve this one!

So the mind map took me to "Rain is just EX-HAIL"  So to make the image. Umbrella man would be perfect.

So, I stuck some text paper onto card and ran it through the Cuttlebug with the Umbrella Man die.

Coloured the edges with Peacock Feathers Distress Ink. I also decided to use the other canvas as it described rain far better.

Die cut some letters and stuck everything down.

I did at a later date change EX-HALE to EX-HAIL as I thought it worked better and was more of a pun!

Hope you enjoyed this process?

  1. must look out for some thick gesso, mine is sooo runny! I take it the stencil isn't harmed leaving it overnight like this?
    What a great finished piece.
